Senior Kaseem Joyner snapped this pic of an original Amy Sherald Painting at the African American Museum on the Seniors' Class Trip on May 7th, 2018. We learned about Amy Sherald in art class, because she was chosen by Michelle Obama to paint her First Lady portrait.
Good eye, Kaseem! Students designed rotating tiles that have both a geometric and organic pattern. Each "tile" requires 4 stamps to be done. Students briefly studied Islamic art and tiles to understand the complex math involved with this style of art. We cut our tiles out of linoleum blocks and stamped them using different color markers. We all learned a lot from this project and I can't wait to share the finished products later...!
"What was the project you completed this year that gave you the most satisfaction...?"
"The project that we completed this year that gave me the most satisfaction was the Egyptian Piece. I am very proud of it. I was able to execute all of my ideas and adopt new ones. The snake tails were hard, but so was crosshatching everything out. I was not familiar with that tool. I love my project and my teacher for giving me the resources that I needed." -Selena Ortiz "I loved the Emoji project in the end because Orionna and I made up our own Emoji. It was different. I honestly use emojis every day and I just liked them overall. That was my only project that got hung up this year. It was the best project I had up all year." -Lawanna Williams "The project I liked this year was the Emoji Sculpture project. I liked this one because it was something we never did before at MACS and I felt that it was very relateable to our generation and it's a new trend that everyone uses on their phone. We had so much freedom to pick any emoji we wanted and this is my personal one that I love and feel confident in that I really did a good job in." -Raeven Wilson "The Abstract Expressionism project gave me the most satisfaction because I was allowed to depict my emotions. I could tell how I feel in a painting instead of just thinking about it. It was challenging picking which emotions to use, because my mood changes a lot." -Byheem Coleman "The project I completed this year that gave met he most satisfaction was the Egyptian Scratch-Out Project. I leared a lot about Egyptian culture and their ancient writing, and I got to use it in my project!"
- Kayla Foster Students examined the art of Jean Michel Basquiat and wrote a reactionary poem to the piece below, entitled "Skull" from 1981.
Here are some process shots of students working on their large abstract diptychs! We studied abstract expressionists like Lee Krasner, Arshile Gorkey, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko before doing these acrylic paintings on paper. Students then wrote artist statements about their work. More shots to come of the beautiful finished products once we mat them!
Students are currently working on the Pop Art Emoji Sculptures, which is a new project we are trying out this year. The students are using balloons for their armatures of their sculptures. They then completed sketches for their 3d sculptures. We can't wait to begin the painting process! |
