African Mask Sculptures
March-May 2019We began this project by first studying various African Masks from different cultures. Students then chose which mask they would like to emulate from a list of about 13 types. Download the clipart we used as reference for this project to the right. -->
Students used papier mache, gesso, acrylic paint, and various craft decorations to create their own sculpture. Decorations we used include raffia, shells, fabric (which was generously donated to us by Ms. Seavey! Thank you!) metal, wire, wooden beads, and several other things. The students were required to have a neutral color scheme and geometric patterns on their mask. They also learned the skill of how to make “Tooled Metal” decorations which they also added to their art. Tooled metal is a type of thick aluminum foil which designs can be pushed and carved into pretty easily. This added a very tactile sensation to our sculptures, which contain a variety of actual textures for your eyes to enjoy! |
