Refracted Self Portraits
January - March 2019
After learning about pencils and graphite as a medium, students created self portraits by first taking a selfie with their cell phones and sending it to me in black and white. I then edited each picture to make sure it was a good reference picture for a self portrait, with a wide range of values. The students divided their long drawing papers into inch-long strips and did the same with their reference image. We then numbered the rows on the references and the rows on the drawing paper, except on the drawing paper we repeat each section twice. This creates a disorienting effect that is interesting to look at- yet the portrait still LOOKS like the student! The kids did a great job on this project.
